The Brookfield Sustainability Institute is proud to present the BSI Global Mass Timber Database, an accessible repository for mass timber structures around the globe, aimed at raising awareness, sharing knowledge, and inspiring creativity among the masses.
This database is scheduled to launch domestically in Q4 2023 and globally in Q1 2024, with building entries increasing continuously through internal research and user-submitted contributions.

Mass timber is shaping the future of low-carbon construction and contributing to the bio-economy. However, as a collective, we face barriers to achieving alignment regarding the global state of mass timber. Through an analysis of three North American databases, the team has identified the following gaps that do not adequately reflect and/or prevent access to the global state of mass timber: fewer than 800 entries, limited global coverage, lack of comprehensive information, and inaccessible paywalls.
These findings raise the following design challenge: How might we build upon current databases, facilitate raising awareness and sharing of knowledge, and inspire the creation of mass timber buildings around the globe?
Research
The BSI Global Mass Timber Database features 860+ buildings, containing up to 20 data points and vibrant descriptions of their history and build. This information has been gathered through reputable sources such as governments and regulatory websites, professional associations and organizations, engineering and architect firms, research reports and whitepapers, and trade publications. By doing so, we ensure that the information is accurate and centralized in one location.
Design
Featuring an elegant design, the database was created with a wide range of users in mind to foster an accessible and rich experience. Knowing this, we designed two methods of navigation: map navigation for users who want to conduct exploratory research and grid navigation for users who want to conduct targeted research. In addition, we made sure to include advanced filtering options for professionals and scholars who need to reduce the scope of their research.
Further demonstrating our commitment to user engagement, we have integrated a building submission form into the design. With this feature, users can easily provide detailed information about new mass timber buildings. Contributing to our database allows us to ensure its continuous growth and comprehensiveness, making it an even more valuable resource for enthusiasts of this innovative construction technique.
